A recent meta-analysis found that topical products with plant-based ingredients are safe and effective for reducing signs of skin aging within 8 weeks of use. These products improved skin hydration, elasticity, and reduced melanin and erythema. The review included data from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library, covering studies published between 2000 and 2024. Eight randomized controlled trials involving 396 participants (aged 15–65) from Europe and Asia met the criteria. Most participants were women experiencing skin concerns like dullness, dark circles, and pigmentation.

Compared to placebo, significant improvements were observed in skin elasticity (SMD 1.10; p = 0.01) and hydration (SMD 0.57; p = 0.03) during the initial 8 weeks. However, effects did not persist beyond 8 weeks. Melanin levels significantly decreased (SMD −0.67; p < 0.00001), and erythema was reduced (SMD −1.17; p = 0.04), as measured by Mexameter tools. No significant changes were noted in transepidermal water loss (TEWL; p = 0.83).

All studies reported no adverse events, confirming the safety of plant-based products. The effects are attributed to antioxidants like saponins, flavonoids, quercetin, and polyphenols. However, limitations include small sample sizes, a low number of studies, and the exclusion of lifestyle factors. Researchers emphasized the need for larger, high-quality trials to explore specific plant effects, wrinkle depth, and other aging markers.

As interest in skin aging grows, further research can enhance the development of safer and more effective botanical skincare products.
