Researchers conducted a 25-year observational study involving 15,000 men and women to examine the impact of hydration on aging and disease risk. They analyzed serum sodium levels in blood samples, a reliable indicator of hydration, where normal levels range from 135 to 146 mmol/L.

The study found that:

  • Serum sodium above 142 mmol/L increased the risk of accelerated aging by 15%.
  • Levels above 144 mmol/L raised the risk of premature aging by 50%.
  • Serum sodium exceeding 142 mmol/L was linked to a 64% higher risk of chronic diseases, including heart failure, diabetes, and dementia.
  • Levels between 144.5-146 mmol/L correlated with a 21% increase in premature mortality.

These findings, published on New Atlas, reinforce the idea that hydration plays a critical role in longevity and disease prevention.

Why Dehydration Accelerates Aging

Prior research has linked high serum sodium levels to inflammation and DNA damage—two key factors in aging. Chronic dehydration may contribute to age-related diseases by promoting these harmful processes.

Although the study did not provide specific recommendations on daily water intake, researchers emphasized the importance of monitoring hydration levels through thirst and regular blood tests.

Other Studies Support These Findings

Interestingly, a separate study found that long-term adherence to a keto diet accelerates cellular aging. Even short-term keto dieting led to the accumulation of aging cells in various tissues. This suggests that proper hydration and a balanced diet may be crucial for maintaining long-term health.
