Recent research from Sun Yat-sen University highlights the significant impact of physical activity and sedentary behavior on aging and lifespan. The study, involving over 20,000 Chinese participants aged 50 or older, underscores the advice to “sit less and move more” as a practical approach to healthy longevity.

The Benefits of Moderate Physical Activity

The researchers analyzed data from the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study, collecting information on participants’ physical activity and sedentary habits. They found that moderate physical activity was strongly associated with increased longevity. Compared to individuals with low activity levels, those engaging in moderate exercise had a 56% higher likelihood of living longer.

Key factors like frequency, duration, and intensity of moderate physical activity all contributed to this positive correlation. Interestingly, vigorous physical activity did not show the same benefits and, in some cases, was linked to adverse effects on longevity.

Physical Activity and Aging

The study also examined the connection between physical activity and accelerated aging. Moderate physical activity, particularly when done frequently, was found to reduce the risk of accelerated aging by over five years. However, longer durations of vigorous exercise were associated with a higher likelihood of accelerated aging by the same amount of time.

These findings suggest that moderation plays a crucial role in reaping the benefits of physical activity. Sedentary behavior, on the other hand, was shown to negatively affect aging, reinforcing the importance of staying active.

Lipids as a Mediator

The protective effects of moderate activity on both longevity and age acceleration were partly mediated by changes in lipid levels. This indicates that improving lipid profiles through regular, moderate exercise may be key to slowing the aging process.

The study provides strong evidence that moderate physical activity is a simple yet effective way to promote healthy aging and extend life expectancy. At the same time, it highlights the potential risks of both sedentary behavior and excessive vigorous exercise. By adopting balanced physical activity habits, individuals can improve their chances of living longer and aging healthily.
