China Launches First Commercial Isotope Production Facility

China’s First Commercial Isotope Production Reactor at the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant is set to revolutionize cancer treatment and expand global isotope supply.

China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has officially inaugurated the country’s first production platform for medical isotopes at a commercial nuclear reactor. The facility, located at the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, the largest in China, has already delivered its first batch of Lutetium-177, a critical isotope for cancer treatment.

Integrated Isotope Production Technology

Specialists at CNNC have successfully integrated a device for isotope generation into a heavy-water reactor at Qinshan Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant. This innovative platform enables automated loading and unloading of irradiation targets in real-time without the need to halt reactor operations.

The new facility, which officially began operations on December 26, ensures a stable and continuous supply of isotopes to meet domestic demand while also expanding export capacity.

Lutetium-177: Revolutionizing Cancer Treatment

Lutetium-177 is in high demand for its role in precision oncology, particularly in treating prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumors. Paired with medication, the isotope selectively destroys cancer cells with minimal side effects.

This breakthrough allows China to bolster its capabilities in nuclear medicine and contribute to global healthcare advancements by exporting this vital resource.

Rigorous Development and Testing

The successful implementation follows months of intensive research and thousands of prototype tests. Engineers have achieved uninterrupted device operation, enhancing efficiency and reliability.

Isotope Production Facility: The Global Context

China’s achievement comes amid global efforts to expand nuclear power applications. The U.S., for instance, aims to triple its nuclear capacity by 2050, constructing large reactors, small modular reactors, and next-generation facilities with advanced cooling systems.

By pioneering isotope production within a commercial reactor, China is not only advancing nuclear innovation but also addressing critical healthcare needs worldwide.
