Aging Shanghai: Building a High-Quality Elderly Care System
Shanghai is tackling the challenges of an aging population with innovative strategies to ensure its senior residents live fulfilling lives. By the end of 2023, Shanghai’s population aged 60 and above had reached 5.68 million, comprising 37.4 percent of the city’s total population. Recognizing this demographic shift, Shanghai has prioritized elderly care development for 27 consecutive years.
Comprehensive Facilities and Specialized Services
The city now provides 176,000 elderly care beds, ensuring sufficient capacity to meet demand. Alongside this, 542 elderly service stations located near residential areas offer essential services like bathing and caregiving. For seniors opting to age at home, professional care services are readily available. Additionally, rural areas have repurposed vacant homes into care facilities, bringing services to underrepresented communities.
Shanghai has also taken steps to support seniors with cognitive impairments by renovating 15,000 specialized care beds. The city emphasizes workforce quality, with 82 percent of caregivers certified and 20 percent holding advanced qualifications, ensuring professional and compassionate care.
Technology and Community Integration
Smart technologies are playing a transformative role in elderly care. Robotic assistants and remote monitoring systems are now standard in 77 smart nursing homes. Additionally, 156 facilities have incorporated internet hospitals to make medical consultations more accessible.
To further integrate elderly care into daily life, Shanghai has developed 502 “one-stop” service hubs across districts and towns. These hubs provide a range of services, making it easier for seniors to access assistance within their communities.
Aging Shanghai: Meeting Nutritional Needs
Nutrition is a cornerstone of elderly well-being. Shanghai has established 405 community canteens and over 2,000 meal service points, with 140 restaurants participating in the elderly meal network. Volunteer delivery services ensure that even homebound seniors receive warm, nutritious meals.
As Shanghai continues to innovate and expand its services, the city is setting an example of how to care for an aging population. These efforts not only enhance the quality of life for its seniors but also ensure they remain active and valued members of society.
