Recognizing Innovation in Aging Support

The Healthy Ageing Prize for Asian Innovation (HAPI) Awards celebrated ten groundbreaking initiatives that address the challenges of an aging population. Held on January 31st, this annual event—organized by the Japan Center for International Exchange (JCIE) and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA)—honored projects that improve older adults’ quality of life through healthcare access, digital inclusion, and community-driven solutions.

Top Award Winners and Their Impact

Four standout projects received grand prizes for their transformative contributions:

  • Technology & Innovation: Japan’s Nurse & Craft won for its Home Nursing to Regenerate the Town initiative, which merges healthcare with community revitalization.
  • Community-Based Initiatives: The Philippines’ Padyarescue Inc. received recognition for the Go Bike Project Ronda Kalusugan Programme, empowering youth to provide mobile healthcare.
  • Supporting Self-Reliance: Thailand’s Chiang Mai University won for MEDEE Fostering Work Skills for Seniors in the Digital Era, which enhances digital literacy among older adults.
  • Care Network Development: South Korea’s Chung-Ang University, Summary A.I., and Jeongeup City Public Health Centre developed an integrated care system for seniors in remote areas.

Collaboration for a Healthier Future

At the awards ceremony, JCIE President Isao Kano emphasized the growing challenges of an aging population and the need for collective efforts to sustain economic stability and healthcare systems.

UNESCAP Deputy Executive Secretary Lin Yang warned that the elderly population in the Asia-Pacific region is expected to double to 1.3 billion by 2050, highlighting the urgent need for better healthcare, digital inclusion, and investment in elderly care services. Experts pointed out that prioritizing healthy aging policies and integrating technology into senior care could yield significant economic and social benefits.

Looking Ahead: A Regional Commitment

The HAPI Awards serve as a platform for promoting knowledge sharing and collaboration across Asia. By encouraging innovative, scalable solutions, this initiative aims to inspire new policies and investments that will help older adults live healthier, more fulfilling lives.
