EHang to Build Futuristic Aerial Taxi Hub in Italy
A New Era for Urban Air Mobility
Chinese company EHang, a pioneer in electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, has unveiled plans to construct a groundbreaking aerial taxi hub in Italy. Unlike conventional helipads, this hub will function as a dedicated terminal, allowing passengers to board autonomous aerial taxis for city-to-city or intra-city travel. The project aligns with EHang’s vision of integrating aerial taxis into urban transport networks, much like public transit stations.
Nature-Inspired Sustainable Design
Designed in collaboration with Italian firm Giancarlo Zema Design Group, the futuristic airport draws inspiration from the African baobab tree. So, the 30-meter tower will be built from steel and laminated wood, combining modern aesthetics with sustainability. Passengers will take an elevator to a rooftop takeoff and landing pad, while the levels below will house a waiting lounge and a panoramic 200-square-meter restaurant.
Solar panels embedded in the facade will generate over 300 kW of energy daily, supplying power to three independent charging stations. This eco-friendly approach supports EHang’s broader mission to promote sustainable air mobility.
EHang’s Expansion Strategy
EHang aims to deploy its autonomous eVTOL taxis primarily in city centers, with a strong focus on eco-tourism. Passengers will enjoy scenic aerial views before reaching their destinations. While the specific Italian city for the first hub remains undisclosed, EHang has plans to build similar facilities across Europe and Southeast Asia.
In China, the company is developing a tourist air terminal in Hezhou, Guangxi province. Mass production of its EH216 model is set to begin in the second quarter of the year, following factory upgrades in Yunfu. With these advancements, EHang is poised to revolutionize urban air travel worldwide.
