Korean Construction Giant Samsung C&T Forms Joint Venture with Neom for $350M Investment in Construction Robotics
Introduction of the Partnership
Samsung C&T, a leading South Korean construction firm, has entered into a joint venture agreement with Saudi Arabia’s special economic zone, Neom, to make a major leap into construction robotics. This collaboration aims to unlock a SAR 1.5 billion (approximately US$350 million) investment in automation technology. The joint venture will focus on revolutionizing the rebar cage assembly process by leveraging advanced robotic welding and tying techniques to manufacture large, pre-made reinforcement cages.
Automating Rebar Cage Assembly
Through this collaboration, the partners aim to drastically reduce manual labor in rebar cage assembly, a process that traditionally requires significant human effort. Neom expects the automation to reduce labor hours by up to 80%, based on global averages for conventional construction techniques. This innovation will enhance efficiency, productivity, and safety in construction projects throughout the region.
Job Creation and Technological Advancements
Samsung C&T and Neom will establish rebar cage assembly factories in the Neom region. These facilities will generate over 2,000 skilled jobs, fostering local employment and advancing Neom’s goal of creating a high-tech industrial economy. The reinforcement cages produced at these factories will play a crucial role in building Neom’s visionary 170km-long linear city, The Line, a project designed to showcase futuristic urban planning.
Statements from Key Figures
Hojin Jung, president and head of corporate new business at Samsung C&T, expressed excitement about the partnership, saying, “We see tremendous potential in collaborating with Neom. We look forward to leading the development of construction automation technologies that will reshape regional projects.” Jung emphasized that the integration of robotics and automation could transform the construction process for the better.
Bandar Ashrour, sector head of design and construction at Neom, highlighted the significance of the joint venture: “Developing an advanced industrial manufacturing economy at Neom is a key part of our plan to accelerate modern construction methods for our major projects. This collaboration will play a pivotal role in that vision.”
Previous Developments at Neom
This joint venture follows Neom’s earlier collaboration with GMT Robotics, which focuses on localizing robotic rebar cage production technology for Neom-based factories. Both agreements are part of Neom’s broader investment strategy, driven by its investment arm, the Neom Investment Fund (NIF). The strategy focuses on advancing technological innovation and sustainability.
